5 Books For When You Need A Boost Of Self-Love & Empowerment

Listen, it's been a tough year (and a half) for everyone.

I know for me personally, I found myself in desperate need of encouragement and healing from the hard knocks I've taken (being a small business owner is no joke, y'all!) Being a bookshop owner, I channeled this need where I knew it could be fulfilled -- books. Books have never failed me (knock on wood). With that, came SELF LOVE & HEALING a newly curated category I added to the shop. With these books, it's my hope both selfishly and selflessly that you'll find healing, empowerment, and magic within the pages.

5. PUSSY PRAYERS by BLACK GIRL BLISS

Here, you'll find stories, sister-girl-talk, and practical, easy-to-do rituals to begin your personal journey of understanding the importance of pleasure, its connection to manifestation, and ways to increase your personal power so you can enjoy #EverydayDeliciousness. This book HAD to make the cut, y'all. Pleasure is something women across the world are taught to hide, ignore, minimize, or erase from themselves, but really pleasure can be a source of power. Understanding the connection between these things and taking the chance to harness your natural sexuality is one way to establish a healing practice that works for you.

4. PLEASE by BLACK GIRL BLISS

Sister to PUSSY PRAYERS, PLEASE was another natural addition to the Miss Read Books shop. This book is all about prioritizing and pursuing pleasure as a means of radical, intentional, and transformative self-care. Yes, that's right! Pleasure = self care! This book explores the natural connection and is another wonderful tool to have in your self-care arsenal.

3. YOKE by JESSAMYN STANLEY

In a series of deeply honest, funny autobiographical essays, Jessamyn explores everything from imposter syndrome to cannabis to why it's a full-time job loving yourself. This book is a #MissRead because of Jessamyn's honest, vulnerable, and relatable take on what it means to not only confront yourself, but accept yourself as well.

2. CHAKRA HEALING by MARGARITA ALCANTARA

This book features a beginner's guide to chakras -- what they are, how they function. I chose this one because I was personally interested in learning more about how my metaphysical state affects my physical and mental state of being. CHAKRA HEALING features the below:

  • A variety of techniques―Connect with your chakras using everything from meditation to crystals, essential oils, yoga, focused breathing, and even diet.
  • Helpful illustrations―Detailed photos and drawings make the tools and exercises even easier to understand.
  • Beginner-friendly approach―Find accessible, bite-size advice that requires no previous knowledge.

1. THE SKIN I'M IN by SHARON G. FLAKE

This is for little girls and your inner little girl. If you've ever felt ugly because you're not what the world says is beautiful, this classic is for you. THE SKIN I'M IN is all about a young woman named Maleeka who finds it difficult to feel beautiful because of her dark skin color. When she meets a teacher with vitiligo who seemingly accepts herself just as she is, her worldview of herself and others is totally upended. This beautiful book is a MUST read and one of my absolute favorites.

I hope these books leave you with some inspiration and hope for a positive, healed, and abundant future. You deserve it!
